BharatPe founder Ashneer Grover has resigned as managing director and director of the board, the payments startup announced on Tuesday. One of the biggest controversies involving Grover became public after an open dispute between him and Kotak Mahindra Bank over his personal investments.

BharatPe has been under intense media and investor scrutiny ever since Grover demanded damages from the bank’s chief Uday Kotak. He claimed Kotak Mahindra Bank declined financing for an investment made by a private person.

The bank, in turn, has claimed in its legal documents that Grover employed “foul” and abusive words towards its employees. The bank also took the decision to pursue legal actions against Grover.


BharatPe announced that Grover was fired after receiving an agenda for the upcoming board meeting which also included the present an audit from an external auditor on his conduct, as reported by Reuters.

“The board has the power to decide to take action according to the findings of the report,” the company said. BharatPe did not provide further details on the conclusions from the review.

BharatPe’s announcement suggests that a resignation might not be a relief for Grover who will be known as the controversy’s most beloved child.
