Facebook Messenger got a bevy of features this week. The features Messenger received include encryption from end to end and screenshot detection, as well as typing indicators, message reactions. These features are rolling out for Messenger’s opt in end-to end encrypted chats.
The feature for detecting screenshots as well as the feature for message reactions can be a feature WhatsApp has been wanting for since the beginning of time. Now the fact that Facebook has made these features accessible to Messenger and WhatsApp, they could soon be made available to WhatsApp as well.
Discussing the possibility of launching new features on Messenger, Timothy Buck, Product Manager at Messenger wrote in a blog post stated in a blog post “Today we’re announcing updates to Messenger’s end-to end encrypted opt-in chats that will improve the experience of messaging.
Making secure and enjoyable interactive features takes time and requires our engineers to invent and overcome technical issues So this announcement is the first in a series of updates to our products to keep making improvements to our services. Cybercrime and hacking are growing It’s more essential than ever to find innovative ways to stay connected with your loved ones via secure and private communications.”
The chat streams of Messenger have been made fully encrypted. Facebook started testing encryption end-to-end for group chats that included video and voice calls in the year 2000. But now, the end-to-end encryption feature is accessible to all.
The end-to-end encryption feature makes chats secure and private. In addition to the sender and the receiver no one else has access to chat messages including Facebook. Another Meta-owned application which boasts end-to-end encryption is WhatsApp.
Another interesting aspect that Messenger has acquired includes The Screenshot recognition feature. This is something that WhatsApp users have been wanting long enough. Messenger users will be informed when a picture of their disappearing messages is captured. It’s the same function that Messenger’s vanish mode. Facebook has begun rolling out this announcement over these next weeks to allow disappearing messages within the end-to-end encryption of chats.
Messenger has also been upgraded to include the feature Message Reactions which is being trialled on WhatsApp. With this feature users can tap and hold the message to open the reactions tray and choose a reactions. You can double-tap on a message for it to “heart” the message.
This feature is already available on iMessage and WhatsApp could soon get it. Additionally, Messenger users will be capable of replying to specific messages within their secure chats from end-to-end via either long pressing or using swipes to respond. It is also possible to transferred in the same way.
Additionally, end-to end encrypted chats will receive a verifiable badge to make it easier for users to distinguish authentic or fake account. These features will be rolled into Messenger in the coming weeks.
